Carwether

Site type: DMH

The site of Carwether is located in Bodmin Moor. There may be prehistoric evidence for the origins of the field systems in this area. [1] There are clear earthworks of the settlement visible on aerial photography. There is evidence for a number of buildings, including poorly preserved longhouses and several outbuildings. [1] The site itself is approximately one hectare in size, with a track to the south of the settlement. [1] Some of the buildings have associated garden closes. There is a large set of field systems adjoining the village which may reach around forty hectares and may be an integral part of the settlement. There is very little documentary evidence to help plot the population of the site. A post-medieval date for desertion has been suggested. [2]

Appears in the Gazetteer of Deserted Medieval Villages known in 1968.
